AOE Spells calculations

Couldn't really find a better place to put this. After the instance timing talk I was thinking about which AOE spells are the best, so I looked them up and put data in a little text file.

Don't know if this is of any interest, but here's what i calculated sorted by dps:

DP% = Damage per 1 Percentage of base mana

Druid (Balance)
  • Ability: Hurricane
  • DPS: 451
  • Dmg: 4510
  • Duration: 10 sec.
  • Mana: 81% of base mana
  • DP%: 55,68

Mage
  • Ability: Blizzard
  • DPS: 426
  • Dmg: 3408
  • Duration: 8 sec.
  • Mana: 74% of base mana
  • DP%: 46,05

Hunter
  • Ability: Volley
  • DPS: 353
  • Dmg: 2118
  • Duration: 6 sec.
  • Mana: 17% of base mana
  • DP%: 124,59

Warlock
  • Ability: Rain of Fire
  • DPS: 337
  • Dmg: 2700
  • Duration: 8 sec.
  • Mana: 57% of base mana
  • DP%: 47,37

Priest (Shadow)
  • Ability: Mind Sear
  • DPS: 228
  • Dmg: 1140
  • Duration: 5 sec
  • Mana: 28% of base mana
  • DP%: 40.71

Shaman
  • Ability: Magma Totem
  • DPS: 185
  • Dmg: 3710
  • Duration: 20 sec.
  • Mana: 27% of base mana
  • DP%: 137,4

Paladin
  • Ability: Consecration
  • DPS: 113
  • Dmg: 904
  • Duration: 8 sec.
  • Mana: 22% of base mana
  • DP%: 41,09

Death Knight
  • Ability: Death and Decay
  • DPS: 62
  • Dmg: 620
  • Duration: 10 sec.
  • Mana: N/A requires 3 runes - 1 of each
  • DP%: N/A


Keep in mind that all ability dmg is increased depending on how much spell power and/or attack power you have, where for example Consecration is increased from both. Also the Swipe ability from cat-druids can put out massive aoe dmg. It only does 90-126 dmg on each target per swing, but where most ranged spell dps have between 2200-2500sp the druid feral dps is almost always above 6k attack power increasing this dmg very much.

After having seen this it might be worth considering to respec my druid to balance just to try this out myself.. Smile

Great work!
Just a side note on hunter:
when facing 3 mobs to take down or 4 or more I found its good to fire off multishot and then volley, both are instant so there is virtualy no lost casting time. You might also run into frey drop a trap and run out to min range to shoot at the mobs.
Think only problem there is to have it effectivly you have to be specced in MM and have talent points distributed in barrage and imp. barrage, otherwise its dmg output is lame and you are faster putting off one mob at the time.

On a warlock's PoV (which i don't expect to be accurate, tho, since I still consider myself quite a newbie on Locks') Rain of Fire is best AoE for Destro spec, while for Affli spec best AoE is Seed of Corruption (if 4 or more mobs) while for 3 or less mobs is just better DPS to DoT them all up.

Didn't know about that one, but sounds quite nice as well..

Very interesting all, but why did you leave out the Spriest AoE spell? Sad Mind sear is pretty good imo Smile I looked up some of the stats:

Priest (Shadow)
Ability: Mind Sear
DPS: 228
Dmg: 1140
Duration: 5 sec
Mana: 28% of base mana
DP%: 40.71

The only drawback is that mind sear doesn't actually dmg your target, only the ones around it.
